Choosing the Right Hydraulic Oil for Heavy Equipment
1/15/2025 · 5 min read
Selecting a hydraulic oil is not just about viscosity grade. It is a decision that touches equipment reliability, energy efficiency and total cost of ownership.
Start with the OEM specification — most manufacturers publish a preferred viscosity grade and additive class. Confirm the operating temperature range: cold climates need a lower pour point and higher viscosity index; hot environments benefit from thermally stable, oxidation-resistant chemistry.
For mobile equipment operating across a wide temperature swing, a multi-grade HVI hydraulic oil often extends drain intervals and reduces wear. In stationary systems with tight filtration, a zinc-free (ashless) formulation may be preferred for cleanliness targets.
